The Complete Guide to Your Children’s Photoshoot
Your child is growing up so fast — and these years between 2 and 5 are some of the most magical, personality-filled moments you’ll ever witness. A professional children’s photoshoot captures who they truly are right now: their cheeky smile, their favourite toys, their wild energy, and those quiet tender moments that disappear before you know it.
At Mihai Gonguta – Photo Studio in Milton Keynes, we’ve photographed hundreds of children’s sessions, and every single one is different — because every child is wonderfully, beautifully unique. This guide covers everything you need to know to prepare for an amazing session.
What to Expect: How the Session Works
Children’s sessions are relaxed, child-led, and never rushed. We follow your child’s pace — not a rigid script.
- Warm-up time – We start gently. Children explore the studio, get comfortable with the space and with me. No pressure to perform straight away.
- Themed portraits – Once they’re settled, we move into styled setups with props, backdrops, and themes tailored to your child’s personality.
- Family & sibling photos – Included in all packages. Perfect for capturing the bond between brothers, sisters, and parents.
- Fun & play moments – Some of the best shots happen when children are just being themselves — laughing, running, hiding behind props.
The Perfect Age: 2 to 5 Years Old
The sweet spot for children’s photography is between 2 and 5 years old. At this age, children:
- Have enough independence to be expressive on their own
- Respond beautifully to play and gentle direction
- Show incredible personality — cheeky, sweet, dramatic, curious
- Can engage with themed props and setups
- Sit (mostly!) for portraits with the right approach
That said, we photograph children of all ages. If your child is 18 months or 7 years old — we can absolutely create beautiful, genuine images. Every child is different, and we adapt to them.
📅 Book 4–6 weeks in advance to secure your preferred date and choose your theme. Popular dates fill quickly — especially around birthdays and school holidays.
🎂 Birthday Sessions — The Special Cupcake Moment
Celebrating a birthday? You’re very welcome to bring a small cupcake or birthday cake so the birthday star can blow out the candles — just like the real thing. These candle-blowing moments make for absolutely magical photographs.
🧁 Cupcake tips: Keep it small (a single cupcake works perfectly), bring a candle or two, and make sure it’s safe for your child to eat if they want a taste after the photo!

What to Bring 🎒
- 🧥 2–3 outfits — variety gives us more creative options throughout the session
- 🧸 A favourite toy or comfort item — familiar objects help shy children relax and open up
- 🍎 Snacks — energy boosters between setups; avoid anything that stains
- 🎂 A small cupcake — optional, for birthday sessions only
- 👗 Comfortable clothes for travelling — your child can change into session outfits at the studio
Outfit Guide
- ✅ Solid colours or simple patterns photograph best
- ✅ Coordinate with siblings — matching tones, not identical outfits
- ✅ Comfort first — a child uncomfortable in their outfit won’t settle
- ❌ Avoid neon colours — they reflect onto skin
- ❌ Avoid large logos or brand writing — they draw attention away from your child’s face
Tips for a Great Session
Timing is everything
Book your session for a time of day when your child is at their best. Tired or hungry children make the session harder for everyone.
Let us do the directing
Children respond differently to parents than to a stranger with a camera. Sometimes children perform better when parents take a step back — we’ll always let you know when to step in.
Shy children are totally fine
We never rush or force. Shy children often produce some of the most beautiful, tender portraits — quiet, thoughtful, deeply expressive.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age is best for a children’s session?
The 2–5 year age range is our speciality, but we photograph children of all ages from 18 months upwards.
Can siblings join the session?
Absolutely — sibling and family photos are included in all packages.
What if my child refuses to cooperate?

Yes! For birthday sessions, you’re very welcome to bring a small cupcake so your child can blow out the candles. If you’d like the full cake smash experience, check out our Cake Smash Photography packages.
